Car with suspension
A 120 kg body on two 10 kg wheels, each on a spring (3500 N/m) and a damper (ζ ≈ 0.4) in a vertical guide: drive it over bumps, change the damping and compare.
Spring launcher
A plunger on a stiff spring (800 N/m) in a vertical guide on a base plate. Drop a ball on it, or pull the plunger down and let go: it throws what sits on it.
Mass on a spring
A 1 kg block hanging from a ceiling on a 40 N/m spring: it bobs with the period 2π√(m/k) = 0.99 s.
Egg drop
An egg rolls off a shelf 3.5 m up and falls into a basket. Catch it without breaking it: it breaks if its speed changes by more than 3 m/s in one hit. At most three parts.
Script
Resonance curve of a driven oscillator
Step the driving frequency up and measure the amplitude: the resonance curve against theory.
Cars over Bumps: Suspension
Two cars on springs drive over the same bumps. Weak dampers (ζ = 0.1) keep bouncing; ζ = 0.6 settles after one swing.
Ordinate 2D: the logo as a machine
The name spelled with machine parts: the O is a ring wheel on a motor, the d a pinion lifting a rack, the dot of the i bobs on a spring, the r's arm lifts a pail on a rope, a ball rolls high up the sides of the a's bowl, the crossbar of the e is a block between two springs, the n and the 2 rock, the t's crossbar slides, and a boat rocks on the water in the D as a weight slides on its deck. Everything repeats every 12 s.
Hooke's Law: Three Masses on Springs
1, 2 and 3 kg hang on identical 40 N/m springs: the extension is mg/k, so twice the mass stretches the spring twice as far.
